The final composition for Memories Adrift, this final part of the Convergence series is a solo classical guitar piece. Composed and recorded in one day, the performance is not perfect, but it does capture some of the passion I had when creating this short exercise-like piece. I put my mics close to my guitar, closer than I normally would for a classical guitar piece, which I think adds to the personal feeling of the piece. You get more string noise than with a wider array, but you get to hear more of what the piece sounds like to me, the performer, rather than somebody sitting in a concert hall.
The piece is performed in a special scordatura (fancy name for alternate tuning) – DADGAD – that allows for composition figures not possible in a standard guitar tuning. I focused as a composer on a long series of dissonances that slowly resolved through counterpoint techniques, including a large number of suspensions and escape tones.
