about

The Friday before Thanksgiving in 2016 I went under the knife for a very special kind of surgery – I had installed into my skull a titanium implant that would connect to a Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA), allowing my right ear to accurately hear sounds for the first time in more than 30 years. It was a very exciting, if frightening time, and was one of the things that inspired me to pick up music again. In recovery from the surgery (which was hazy – cranial surgery is no joke), my friend and fellow musician Chad “Koomi” Rosser came and stayed with us (mostly to have thanksgiving for us, not because I needed more help than my wife could give). He proposed we compose a song together using my minimalist approach, and “Tranverse” is what emerged. Chad provides the bass parts, and I did everything else. Inspired by the work of Sunn O))) and Sleep, this piece uses layered, distorted bass guitar and a plodding tempo to produce a heavy, metal-like experience, though there are no guitars present.
I re-worked the drum parts in 2017 (along with a total re-mix of the recording) because, understandably, they weren’t up to snuff due to my anaesthetized mind.
