“Wooden Room” is actually the first piece I composed for the Memories Adrift project, but is also one of the most fitting. I was specifically remembering practicing “Fractal Sketches,” a piece by my composition teacher Robert Strizich, on the wood-lined stage of the Wallberg Recital Hall at Fresno State. This piece represents my take on the classical guitar textures “The Striz” (as we used to call him) used extensively in the piece, arranged with my minimalist approach to constant variation and a slow modulation through various tonal areas. “Wooden Room” as a recording is far from a perfect performance, but often we love best those things which are imperfect, precisely because their imperfection gives them character, as in the Shibui aesthetic that pervades this entire project.
